What To Do

A step-by-step guide for families immediately following a loss at home.

1 Immediate Steps at Home

In the unfortunate event of a passing at home, there are a few immediate actions that should be taken with care and respect:

  • Immediately close the eyes of the deceased.
  • Raise the head to 3-4 inches by placing a pillow underneath.
  • If required, moisten the lips by applying a small amount of petroleum jelly or water.

2 Medical Certification

The next vital step is securing the proper medical documentation from an attending physician.

  • Notify the Family Doctor who has been treating the deceased.
  • The Doctor may ask for details such as full name, age, address, date of birth, occupation, and medical records.
  • The Doctor will issue a Medical Cause of Death Certificate (Form No. 8 - Old Format or Form No. 4 - New Format) to the next of kin.

Note: The family should make at least 3 photocopies of this certificate for reference before deciding on a burial or cremation service.

3 Death Registration

As per Government rules, all deaths must be formally registered. You or a relative may do so at the local Municipal Office, or you can contact us to handle this process for you.

The Death Registration Karkoon (DRK) will require the following information:
